The Bank of Dad is closed. Just after the turn of the century I bought a thick, dollar green tee-shirt from the Crazy Shirts store on Maui.
The print on the front said, Bank of Dad, implying strongly that I was the family banker, specifically for my children.
That was true. Then.
The children were in college back then and money going out was often less than money coming in. My children resisted any long-term payback plan to the bank, so in protest I wore the Bank of Dad tee-shirt long and proud for many years, especially when the children were around.
All good things must come to an end. Tee-shirts come and go. They become frayed and stained over the years. The children are living on their own and there is no need to taunt them with my status as family banker. A few years ago my Bank of Dad tee-shirt was relegated from wearing in public, to wearing to bed, to wearing while cleaning, to not wearing at all.
Yes, it has that many stains.
As of today, with one stain too many on a tee-shirt that has collected plenty of visible stains through the years, the Bank of Dad is officially closed.
The next stop is to use it to help remove wax from the car.
