I can’t sing. I can’t dance.
I’m not much of an athlete and certainly no brainiac (despite finishing in the top 70 of my high school graduating class). I have managed to run through seven different careers in my lifetime; not sticking to one, excelling at, well, none.
I can type.
That skill was learned in high school, thanks to Miss Hastings, the quintessential unmarried school marm. Yes, that’s a term.
A woman who is a schoolteacher especially in a rural or small-town school
She came complete with a surly disposition, dowdy teacher’s attire, and hair bun.
To be fair, and to embellish the persona, she also taught my mother when she was in high school.
In a lunchroom encounter, Miss Hastings called me a laggard and was certain I would not graduate that year. Although math was not my strong suit, I’d already done the math and found a way to graduate with or without a passing grade in her class.
I passed typing.
If there was a skill that helped me in adult life it was the ability to type, which followed the ability to speak (and write) in complete sentences, which was slightly ahead of my ability to spell better than a handful of girls.
Can’t sing. Can’t dance. Can spell.
